Celebrating Red Wagyu Twins
The Philippine Society of Animal Reproduction (PhilSAR) proudly celebrates another milestone in the advancement of reproductive biotechnology in the Philippines with the successful birth of Red Wagyu twin calves produced through Multiple Ovulation and Embryo Transfer (MOET) technology at Banderas Farm, Silang, Cavite.
This remarkable achievement demonstrates the tremendous potential of embryo transfer technologies in accelerating the propagation of genetically superior cattle while maximizing the reproductive capacity of elite breeding animals.
How MOET Technology Works
Multiple Ovulation and Embryo Transfer (MOET) is one of the most effective assisted reproductive technologies used worldwide for rapid genetic improvement in livestock.
The process begins with the selection of a genetically superior purebred Red Wagyu cow as the embryo donor. To stimulate the development of multiple ovarian follicles, the donor undergoes a carefully designed hormonal treatment protocol involving:
Progesterone (P4) to synchronize the reproductive cycle;
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) to induce the simultaneous growth of multiple ovarian follicles;
Prostaglandin F₂α (PGF₂α) to regress the corpus luteum and facilitate estrus;
Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) administered at the time of artificial insemination (AI) to ensure timely ovulation.
Following successful artificial insemination, the fertilized embryos develop naturally within the donor's reproductive tract. Seven days after AI, the embryos are carefully recovered from the uterine horns through a non-surgical embryo flushing procedure.
The viable embryos are then evaluated, graded, and transferred into synchronized recipient cows. In this case, crossbred Red Wagyu recipient cows successfully carried the pregnancies to term, resulting in the birth of healthy Red Wagyu twin calves.
A Significant Achievement for Genetic Improvement
The successful production of twin Red Wagyu calves highlights the effectiveness of MOET as a powerful tool for multiplying superior genetics in a much shorter period compared with conventional breeding.
Instead of producing only one calf per year from an elite donor cow, MOET enables multiple embryos to be collected from a single donor and transferred to several synchronized recipient cows. This dramatically increases the number of offspring carrying valuable genetic traits such as superior growth performance, carcass quality, feed efficiency, and reproductive potential.
The birth of twins further showcases the capability of embryo transfer technology to optimize reproductive efficiency while maintaining the high genetic value of the offspring.
