Breakthrough in Dairy Cattle MOET: Successful Embryo Collection Marks New Milestone

The Philippine Society of Animal Reproduction (PhilSAR) celebrates another important milestone in advancing livestock reproductive biotechnology with the successful embryo collection in Holstein-Jersey cross dairy cattle using Multiple Ovulation and Embryo Transfer (MOET) technology at Jeoax Farm, Ilagan City, Isabela.

The activity was carried out using the City of Ilagan Mobile Laboratory for MOET by the TherioSolutions Team—Dr. Peregrino G. Duran (PhilSAR Founding Adviser), Francis Canare, and Mark Salazar—together with Philippine Carabao Center scientists Dr. Danilda Hufana-Duran (PhilSAR President) and Perry Irish Duran (PhilSAR Incorporator). The project was implemented in collaboration with the City Government of Ilagan under the leadership of Hon. Mayor Josemarie Diaz and City Veterinarian Dr. Jason Gangan, a PhilSAR member.

This initiative is supported by the Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR) as one of the project's major funding partners in promoting reproductive biotechnology for the Philippine livestock industry.

First MOET Embryo Collection in Dairy Cattle

While the team has previously achieved success with MOET in Wagyu cattle, this activity marked its first embryo collection attempt in Holstein-Jersey cross dairy cattle, representing an important step toward accelerating genetic improvement in the country's dairy sector.

One superovulated donor yielded an impressive 13 embryos, highlighting the remarkable potential of MOET technology to rapidly multiply genetically superior dairy animals.

Of the embryos recovered:

  • Six embryos were immediately transferred to synchronized recipient cows in Barangay Namnama, Ilagan City.

  • Six embryos were successfully cryopreserved for future embryo transfer programs and hands-on training activities.

  • One embryo was identified as unfertilized and discarded following evaluation.

Generating Knowledge Through Research

Embryo recovery from the other two donor cows was unsuccessful due to thick mucus that obstructed the embryo filters during uterine flushing. Further examination revealed several unovulated follicles, suggesting incomplete ovulation that likely contributed to the excessive mucus.

These findings provide valuable scientific insights and indicate that the GnRH dosage and ovulation protocol may require refinement when adapting MOET protocols developed for Wagyu cattle to Holstein-Jersey cross dairy cattle. Such observations contribute to the continuous improvement of MOET protocols under Philippine production conditions.

Bringing Advanced Biotechnology Directly to Farms

The activity also demonstrated the effectiveness of the City of Ilagan Mobile Laboratory in delivering advanced reproductive biotechnology directly to livestock farms. The mobile facility enabled efficient embryo collection, evaluation, grading, cryopreservation, and embryo transfer under field conditions.

Artificial Insemination Technicians, Jeoax Farm personnel, and representatives from the National Dairy Authority actively observed the procedures, providing valuable opportunities for knowledge sharing and capacity building in MOET technology.

Looking Ahead

The next phase of the project will focus on superovulating carefully selected genetically superior dairy cattle owned by Ilagan farmers. These animals will serve as future embryo donors, enabling the rapid multiplication and wider dissemination of superior dairy genetics throughout the city and neighboring communities.

This achievement highlights the power of collaboration among researchers, local government units, national agencies, and the private sector in advancing reproductive biotechnology and strengthening the Philippine dairy industry.
